GOVERNMENT SUBMISSION - Re: LEAKY BUILDINGS - Oct 02'

I'm Scott Simôn - I am an Architectural and Structural Designer of 20 years experience, in Auckland. I have a practice where I design houses, manually on a drawing board, and I have 2 full time draughts people who use AutoCAD Software.

I have watched and heard the recent news regarding the state of the buildings and the industry. However, myself, and many of my colleagues are not surprised at all. In fact we've been discussing these problems for at least five years, and joked about many of the cowboy contractors we have seen in about the last 10 - 20 years.

Recently in the Media, many "guns" have gone off - firing in all directions and because they don't know who to aim at - they just seemed to look at who they will hit. I would now like to cover some points, where the blame can clearly be seen as spread across a number of areas.

My brief will cover many groups who have participated in the demise of our industry. They are:

  • a) Government and Legislation
  • b) Architects and Designers
  • c) Councils and Certifiers
  • d) Builders and Developers
  • e) Building Product Manufacturers
  • f) Home Owners
